Situation

A Dallas law firm runs a technical SEO audit through a popular SaaS tool and receives a 47-page report. The tool flags 2,340 errors, 1,880 warnings, and 4,120 notices. The marketing director opens the report, sees the red and yellow bars, and forwards it to the web developer with the subject line "Please fix all of these." The developer looks at the report, sees that 3,100 of the items are "missing meta description" warnings on paginated blog archive pages, another 1,800 are notices about "image file size greater than 100 KB" on blog post hero images, and the remaining mix is duplicated across categories because the tool double-counts. Nothing in the report is prioritized by revenue impact. Nothing explains which fixes will change rankings and which are noise.

The developer triages in the only rational way: they pick the easiest items to clear, mark them closed, and leave the structurally important problems alone because those would require architectural work the audit did not authorize. Six months later, the firm's rankings are unchanged. The audit was completed. Nothing moved.

This is the state of technical SEO audits in the Dallas market, and it is not specific to any vertical. The tooling is mature, the reports are thorough, and the prioritization is wrong. Problem

One: Indexation architecture. A site with 400 pages indexed in Google but 1,200 URLs reachable via crawl is burning crawl budget on parameter-laden URLs, search result pages, filter combinations, and pagination duplicates that should never have been in the index. Google's crawler treats every allowed URL as a vote on topical authority; if 67 percent of votes go to low-value URLs, the high-value pages lose ranking signal. The fix is a combination of robots.txt directives, meta noindex tags, canonical tags, and URL parameter handling in Google Search Console. Most sites get none of these right.

Two: Canonical tag discipline. Canonical tags on most sites are either missing, self-referencing when they should cross-reference, or cross-referencing when they should self-reference. A product listing page that uses a canonical tag pointing to the category root consolidates ranking signal into one page, which is correct if the listing pages are near-duplicates and incorrect if they target distinct queries. A blog post page with a self-referencing canonical is correct; a blog post page with a canonical pointing to the latest post in the series is a recipe for mass deindexation. Diagnosing canonical problems requires reading the URLs and understanding the intent, not running a tool.

Three: hreflang implementation for multilingual sites. Covered in detail in our international SEO post, but the short version is that broken hreflang — bidirectional references that are not actually bidirectional, missing x-default tags, conflicts between canonical and hreflang, or sitemap-hreflang mismatch — causes Google to treat all locales as duplicates of the default and deindex the translations. This is an invisible failure on monolingual audits; it becomes a critical failure the moment the site adds Spanish or any second language.

Four: Core Web Vitals performance. We covered this in detail in our Core Web Vitals post. LCP, CLS, and INP are direct ranking signals, and most sites fail at least one of them on mobile. The fix is engineering discipline applied at the render path — image optimization, font preload, third-party script defer, layout-shift elimination. The fix is not a tool. Tools detect the problems. Engineers fix them.

Five: Schema markup completeness and accuracy. Schema.org markup is how Google parses the semantic content of a page, and it drives rich results, AI Overviews citations, and increasingly the signals that determine which pages appear in generative answers. Most sites ship schema that is either absent, incomplete, or wrong. A local business site that ships without LocalBusiness schema is invisible to half of Google's local ranking signals. A service page without Service schema with provider, areaServed, and hasOfferCatalog is invisible to the schema-driven parts of the category SERP. A blog post without Article schema with datePublished, dateModified, author, and mainEntityOfPage is competing with one hand tied. The fix is an audit against Google's structured data guidelines and a systematic rebuild of the schema graph across all page templates.

Six: Internal linking topology. Every site has a link graph whether or not the operator thinks about it, and most link graphs are accidental. A healthy internal link graph has a clear hub-and-spoke structure: pillar pages link to cluster pages, cluster pages link back to pillar and sideways to related clusters, and the homepage links to exactly the pages the operator wants ranked. An unhealthy graph has orphan pages that nothing links to, doom-loops where three pages link to each other and nowhere else, and missing links from high-authority pages (homepage, major service pages) to pages that need ranking support. Fixing the link graph usually requires mapping it explicitly — we export the full crawl, build an adjacency matrix, and plan a targeted link build to re-weight the graph toward the pages that matter.

Seven: Title tag and meta description intent matching. Most sites write title tags that describe the page internally ("Services | Firm Name") rather than targeting the query intent the page is trying to rank for ("Commercial Litigation Dallas | Firm Name"). The fix is brand-suffix pattern consistency across the site, 50 to 60 character titles on desktop, primary keyword in the first 30 characters for mobile SERP display, and meta descriptions at 140 to 160 characters that match the query intent while including a compelling CTA. This is the least technical of the ten items and one of the most universally neglected.

Eight: URL structure and slug quality. URLs like /page?id=1247&category=services are a structural ranking penalty that persists for as long as they exist. Clean slug URLs — /services/commercial-litigation — communicate topical relevance to the crawler and to the user. Migrating a legacy URL structure to clean slugs requires 301 redirect mapping across every changed URL, and the migration is where most sites break because the redirects are missed or wrong. The fix is not the URL structure itself. The fix is the redirect map that preserves ranking equity through the migration.

Nine: Mobile parity and rendering. Google has indexed mobile-first since 2019, which means the mobile version of the page is the version Google ranks. A site that renders content on desktop via JavaScript that fails on mobile, or a site that hides content on mobile via CSS display: none, or a site whose mobile template is missing sections the desktop template includes — all of these are invisible to desktop-focused audits and visible to Google. The fix is to render the mobile Googlebot view explicitly (via the URL Inspection tool in Search Console or a Googlebot-headers fetch) and compare it line-by-line to the desktop view. Discrepancies get fixed at the template level.

Ten: Crawl error backlog in Google Search Console. Every site accumulates a backlog of soft 404s, server errors, redirect chains, and blocked resources in Search Console's Coverage report. Most operators do not check the report regularly; the backlog grows; Google reads the growing backlog as declining site health and down-weights the domain slightly over time. The fix is weekly review of the Coverage report, triage of new errors within 72 hours, and resolution of chronic errors at the root cause. Implication
